Chinese fresh groceries store chain Kinglomo has recently inaugurated a new retail format in Changsha which is more aligned with both its operations and savvy client base. Situated at Wanjiali Plaza, a recently redeveloped shopping centre in the Dongtundu area of town, the store occupies a spacious 325 sqm. (3,498 sq.ft.) unit on the ground floor. The interior design, created by Shanghai-based spatial design practice Some Thoughts, aims to emphasise the store chain’s large variety of fresh quality offerings. As such, the design is a seamless extrapolation of optimising product selection, distribution, and pricing mechanisms, while all of the aforementioned also pushes upstream manufacturers to improve their supply chains. Indeed, Kinglomo aims to firmly anchor its brand in fresh snacks, while also offering a redefined consumer-centric value and service.

This focus has resulted in an increased efficiency which has influenced the store design, specifically in terms of modularity and durability of used materials, but also cool aesthetics that resonate with the young target demographic. A ceiling clad in corrugated galvanised steel, trusses and, large light fixtures, and clean white walls form an appropriate backdrop for a rigid configuration of displays and refrigerated storage units laden with merchandise. Intentionally industrial and low-key, the setting aims to be accessible and practical, while also supporting Kinglomo‘s new brand image. The new Kinglomo store stocks a wide variety of freshly made local snacks, ranging from mulberry and hawthorn bars, and fried beef dices, to candied mango and crab-flavoured rice crackers. © superfuture
