The recently revealed collaborative eyewear collection of forward fashion powerhouse Maison Margiela and innovative eyewear brand Gentle Monster has tongues wagging in excitement across the planet. Anticipating this global buzz, the latter has launched a series of pop-up stores in a number of key cities, including Seoul, obviously, the Chinese boom cities of Shanghai, Chengdu and Beijing, Singapore, London, and last but not least, New York City. We’re taking a closer look at the latter shopping destination where an ephemeral retail space has been set up in the SoHo district. Situated on the voluminous ground floor of a historic four-storey structure built in 1900, the Maison Margiela x Gentle Monster pop-up store sees a whitewashed space that’s fully modernised, but retained its original black steel support pillars. Seemingly inserted, the setting features light timber wall panelling and shelving units of shiny metal. Taking centre stage is an installation comprising two moving robotic creatures, a signature Gentle Monster retail element, and two matching display tables laden with Maison Margiela x Gentle Monster eyewear (open through Apr 30).
