Founded in 2016 as an online retailer in art and design by aficionados Henry Barclay, Thomaz Vidal and Marco Azeredo, the Boobam brand has since resonated well with a growing demographic of like-minded Brazilians nationwide. The entrepreneurs have cleverly developed a retail format and platform which spawn from the sheer abundance of talented designers and artists of their homeland. Aiming to create a community of artists and designers that’s also a standard in quality products, creativity and good taste, a curation programme was established. And yes, once designs are approved, they’re included in the Boobam online shop. Interestingly, access to the curation programme is easy as submissions can simply be done online. Anticipating their clients’ desire to experience the merchandise in a physical setting, the entrepreneurs stepped up their operations by opening a brick-and-mortar store.

The location? A former mechanical workshop in the leafy Pinheiros neighbourhood of São Paulo. The venue, measuring a spacious 550 sqm. (5,920 sq.ft.), sees an interior design by local architect Felipe Hess, and features an interior design which has retained most of the building’s original configuration and look. A recessed front yard and entrance, enhanced with a gazebo and a band of lush plants, funnels visitors straight into the elongated retail space. Inside, interventions take shape through the simplicity of the walls and volumes, but also through the infrastructures that are exposed and present themselves in pristine white and start to highlight the materiality and texture both of the old structure and new interventions. The new Boobam store presents carefully curated designs from its portfolio of over 8,000 items by various Brazilian artists and designers.
