Following a slew of outposts in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, Oakland-based coffee roaster Blue Bottle Coffee has finally entered China. The coffee brand’s newest café has opened its doors in Shanghai a little while ago, occupying the former dormitory built in 1926 for the Shanghai Yutong Flour mill. The historic structure measures a whopping 762 sqm. (8,202 sq.ft.) spread across two floors and features an interior design by Tokyo-based architecture practice and longtime collaborator Schemata. Given its historic importance, the façade has been fully retained, but the interior sees quite a transformation. An entirely new concrete-based framework and configuration have been installed, creating a voluminous, light-filled atrium and various seating areas. At the very core of the premises is a full-fledged metal service counter with a matching satellite storage unit situated on the ground floor, but upstairs a second service counter can be found. Additional furnishings comprise metal communal tables paired with wooden chairs, circular marble equivalents with a variety of chairs and sofas, and simple metal tables and stools on the veranda outside. Elsewhere in the city, Blue Bottle Coffee has also opened a roastery which will support further expansion in this expansive market.
