For a long time overshadowed by the capital Jakarta, and to a lesser extent Surabaya, the Indonesian city of Bandung has quietly carved a niche for itself with a vibe all its own. Perched on the cool highlands of the western part of Java, the city has fostered a vibrant indie music scene that has the whole archipelago mesmerised, and only now, interest from beyond the country’s borders has piqued. Peels Records is a record store, sound room and cocktail bar rolled into one venue, and featured in a previous post when it first opened a year ago. As of late, the venue has gained an additional watering hole on the premises that doubles the fun factor. Dubbed Peels Pocket Bar, the new space features a collaborative interior design by artist and Central St. Martins and Institut Teknologi Bandung graduate Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo and local practice Dendy Darman Studio. Situated in a meticulously restored Dutch colonial building, Peels Pocket Bar offers a contrasting setting as it’s entirely dipped in an electrifying blue all over the walls and furniture, creating an intimate yet cozy atmosphere. The two aforementioned creative entities are the first in a series of artists to display artworks, being projections of abstracted and somewhat hallucinogenic TV imagery paired with Mid-century Modern-inspired chairs crafted from blue fibreglass.
