Spaniards are die-hard sweet tooths, and as a result, you’ll find pastry stores on almost every corner nationwide, but very few feature an understated look as the newly opened Cara Mela in Chamberí, a leafy downtown district of Madrid. The store occupies a unit of interconnected spaces on the ground floor of a residential building from the early 1960s, and features an interior design by local art and architecture collective Casa Antillón. The store sees two distinctly different spaces—a small front section where customers enter the premises, featuring a backdrop of white walls and matching floor tiles and furnished with a sales counter, bar, warehouse, sink and all necessary equipment, all clad in shiny metal, and what follows in Cara Mela‘s back section couldn’t be more different. More spacious, tranquil, and last but not least, fully dipped in a soothing green hue, it’s here where clients can sit back with their delectable purchase of choice, offering an escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Interestingly, the setting comes with versatile furnishings with organic dimensions and which can be used as a seat or as a table. A window framed in bright red metal allows a peek into the shop’s buzzing kitchen. As said, Cara Mela predominantly serves cakes, including savoury ones, but also caramel popsicles with different toppings, and croissants and sandwiches.
