We talked about Balenciaga‘s first boutique at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol earlier this week in a previous post, which, as said, is the brand’s second retail space in the metropolitan area of the Dutch capital. In reverse order, we herewith present the luxury brand’s first and more prominent retail space in the city’s fast-evolving Golden Mile of luxury shopping. Opened a little while ago, this much bigger Balenciaga store occupies 185 sqm. (1,991 sq.ft.) on the ground floor and basement of a late 19th-century residential building by Belgian architect Jean Servais. The meticulously created interior design follows the latest design codes as laid down by the brand’s influential creative director Demna Gvasalia, offering a stark contrast with the façade’s ornate architectural details.
The setting on the ground floor features smooth concrete flooring paired with walls either covered in a layer of slightly rougher concrete or overlaid by mottled velvet curtains and sleek aluminium and glass shelving. An elongated steel cabinet sits near the entrance, while in the back ottomans clad in worn leather are grouped next to a raw concrete display. Ceilings are metal grids that show the technical conduits suspended above, tying in the two sections. Downstairs, the aesthetic shifts slightly, and sees flooring covered in fluffy carpeting – in matching grey, of course – and raw concrete walls, although parts are lined with aluminium and glass shelving. Additional furnishings comprise similar ottomans, this time in a bright red hue, once again flanked by a chunky concrete display. The new Balenciaga store carries select men’s and women’s apparel, shoes, bags, eyewear and jewellery.

Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
