Presented during Copenhagen Fashion Week‘s latest edition, Soulland‘s S/S 2o22 Collection is rooted in recurring classic motifs such as good and evil, evoking memories of childhood and community, and showing the importance of story telling, albeit with a contemporary urban edge. Continuing its trilogy based on the power of books, Soulland conjures up a timeless fable of an evil king thwarting the love between a water nymph and a centaur—a tragic tale of star-crossed lovers and a rich vein of creative inspiration. Against a background of black, beige, navy and dark brown, highlights of pink offer glimpses of optimism and joy. Signature flower prints and jacquards appear throughout the collection – this time deconstructed, cut-out and overdrawn with naive sketches. The centaur makes an appearance in a special print commissioned from American artist Aaron Elvis where he’s joined by roses and half-finished fairy tale illustrations scattered across shirts and T-shirts. The choice of fabrics reflects Soulland’s commitment to responsible sourcing via the use of dead stock, recycled yarns and organic methods.

Additionally, texture plays a huge role in this evocative story, from crocodile print adding visual interest, to shiny mock leather and the lustrous sheen of tech fabrics through to micro structures such as seersucker, crinkle finishes and ripstop. And, as a whimsical touch, rose-shaped buttons appear unexpectedly on cuffs. Indeed, every detail counts. Throughout the collection, contrasts are abound. Large boxy silhouettes play against body-hugging shapes, and sporty details surprise on classic garments. A flowing silk organza rose print dress works perfectly with tiny shorts whilst 1990s style voluminous pants are pulled into shape with draw cords. Elastic waistbands are given to wide suiting trousers and slits appear at hems and cuffs to hint at something more underneath. For men, square cut double-breasted jackets and loose fit shirts are worn with slouchy pleated pants for a relaxed attitude and slub silk monogram pyjama styles work for an evening out. Knits also play with weight and texture with semi-transparent lightweight wispy sweaters and hand crocheted chunky stripes introduced for both men and women.
