Move over Amsterdam! Canada‘s forward legalisation and regulation of the recreational use of pot has spawned countless new shops across the country, and some are true gems when it comes to retail design. Signalling this professional level of this new kind of trade is Edition X, a newly opened design-led shop in Toronto, specialising in a curated range of high quality cannabis products and accessories, and all in a setting that puts equivalent spaces you come across in the Dutch capital to shame. The company secured a location on the corner of Dupont Street and Spadina Road in The Annex neighbourhood, occupying an elongated 1,000 sqm. (10,764 sq.ft.) ground floor space. Designed by local architecture practice StudioAC, the objective was to create an understated and uncluttered space with a singular volume. As such, a long central form was developed inspired by the dimensions of the retail space which runs along the ceiling towards the end of the store, bridging large recessed sections along the way. The grid element is replicated below by a row of display units crafted from the same material, featuring deep trays upon which the merchandise is presented. A ledge at different heights runs along both side walls adds up to the spatial dynamic, while also providing additional space to display products in trays and potted plants. As said, the Edition X stocks cannabis products, and does so in various forms, as well as a wide range of related products, including lighters, ashtrays, grinders, bongs and storage jars.
