Only a month after opening opening its doors, the adidas Brand Center at Miyashita Park mall in Tokyo has expanded with an additional space one floor up. Measuring 83 sqm. (893 sq.ft.), the lofty space has been designed by the brand’s in-house design team and is exclusively dedicated to its adidas Originals collection. Shoppers gain access to the second floor by a newly installed metal staircase with an industrial look, but it’s one which has been adorned with bold artwork by Masakazu Kitayama, an acclaimed graphic designer best known for his jacket designs for Japanese cult musicians such as Cornelius, Ichiko Aoba and GEZAN. Specialised in typography, the stairwell is plastered in a playful collage of colours, symbols and letters which reference the brand and various lines, city and venue. Entitled Unite, the mural represents Miyashita Park as a place where gender, generation, and nationality are united and mixed, and inflating the aura of inclusion even further, is the fact that it was created by people with disabilities who live and work in the Shibuya area where the mall is situated. The interior design features different sections for each of the adidas Originals segments, and is inspired the archive of the adidas headquarters located in Germany. This expansion makes the adidas Brand Center the brand’s biggest retail space in the Land of the Rising Sun.
