Nowhere else are creative boundaries and disciplines blurred, mixed, or simply reinvented as in Japan, and it’s particularly in the capital city Tokyo where new forms of expression manifest regularly. Behold 3110NZ by LDH Kitchen, a quirky new restaurant and gallery concept concocted by NANZUKA, a leading contemporary art gallery in the city’s Shibuya area, hospitality group and food & beverages company LDH Kitchen, and the renowned Michelin-starred Sushi Saito restaurant. Situated in Naka Meguro, a stone’s throw away from the area’s scenic cherry tree-lined canal, the hybrid venue occupies a ground floor unit of a six-storey residential building and features a characteristic Flintstones-style interior design by New York City-based architecture practice Snarkitecture. The grey stuccoed façade with the organically shaped doorway and decorative wall opening, similarly backlit as the upper and lower ledge, all signal the aesthetic that’s to be found inside.

3110NZ by LDH Kitchen is a sushi restaurant, and upon entering the premises, there’s no doubt about that. Seating  just six guests, a sushi bat sits inside an organically shaped wall opening with a similar, but decorative and smaller opening, as a backdrop. The three remaining walls see large cut-outs, once again backlit, and each features an artwork. The concrete flooring sees large patches of granite, creating a playful pattern of faux large rocks. Mind you, Hajime Sorayama, one of NANZUKA‘s biggest artists, has designed the venue’s futuristic logo. As said, 3110NZ by LDH Kitchen is a gallery by day, and the inaugural show by acclaimed Japanese pop artist Keiichi Tanaami, entitled Memorial Reconstruction presents three large paintings. And the food? Well, that’s been very well taken care off. The sushi served are made by Ikuya Kobayashi, a renowned Michelin-starred chef who previously supervised the similarly Michelin-starred Sushi Saito restaurant in Hong Kong. Diners are able to feast on sushi prepared the Sushi Saito way, using fresh fish, rice, salt, vinegar and dashi stock.
