Since Canada fully legalised the cultivation, possession, acquisition and consumption of cannabis and related products in 2018, the local retail scene has seen an increasing number of well-designed stores popping up, offering merchandise in a distinctly modern lifestyle setting. Choom is one of the companies which has anticipated this forward legal context with fittingly modern retail spaces. Following outposts across Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia, Choom has recently opened a new flagship store at home base Vancouver. Situated in the city’s waterside Olympic Village neighbourhood, the store occupies a 264 sqm. (2,839 sq.ft.) ground floor unit of a newly built multi-storey apartment complex and features an understated yet welcoming interior design by local architecture and design practice Cutler.

Whitewashed walls, an exposed ceiling with a myriad of utility pipes dipped in a similar hue, and raw concrete flooring form the backdrop of elongated light wood info tables, slightly reminiscent of a specific electronics giant’s stores, matching wall panelling and glass top cabinets. A sales counter and additional cabinets in solid black add a certain depth to the setting, while pillars clad in faux vegetation, a homey seating arrangement, potted plants and curated playful artwork not only tick all the boxes of a modern urban lifestyle, but also aligns with Choom‘s aim to deliver an elevated customer experience. The store highlights cannabis favourites from local licensed producers, as well as products by some of North America’s leading cannabis brands, and offers a personalised service by specially trained staff, or rather, in proper Choom parlance, educators.
