Founded by certified coffee grader Leif Sung An and his business partner Clifford Park, Stereoscope Coffee is a niche coffee roasting company and coffee parlour based in the happening Arts District of Los Angeles. Just a little while ago, the company expanded with a second café on the ground floor of 100 Bayview, a mixed-use office building in Newport Beach. Occupying a lofty L-shaped ground floor unit, the venue sees a collaborative interior design by L.A.-based architecture practice Wick and Land design studio. The two teams harkened back to a recent trip to Italy where they marvelled at Antonio da Correggio’s Assumption of the Virgin, a 16th-century fresco adorning the dome of the medieval Parma Cathedral. As a result, they envisioned the possibility of a modern interpretation and adaptation of that historic Renaissance approach, with a multi-dimensional aspect to it that would capture the essence of the word ‘stereoscope’, a precursor to modern 3D technology. A photograph of Christy Lee Rogers, a Hawaiian-born artist known for Renaissance and Baroque-inspired shots, was purchased and then transferred to onto vinyl rolls.
The rolls were then applied to the ceiling, just like wallpaper. Stereoscope Coffee‘s new outpost may look boldly dramatic when looking up, it’s counterbalanced by a clean and understated design below. The wall imagery gradually fades into white and is paired with polished concrete flooring. Furnishings include a light oak bench which wraps around the space and the service station is clad in Brazilian blue orca marble, balancing out the spectacular ceiling aesthetic. The aforementioned bench is paired with white metal tables, but also shelving for 20 pairs of 3D glasses to properly view the artwork. The menu at Stereoscope Coffee includes a large variety of coffee concoctions such as espresso, cortado, Kyoto cold brew and latte made with homemade syrups, but also features healthy bites. The breakfast section boasts pastries, granola and yogurt, bagels, and for the rest of the day, customers can enjoy a range of tasty salads and salads. Not a coffee fan? No worries, the menu also lists a variety of flavoured milks, lemonades and specialty teas.
