Despite all and everything, the shopping scene in Hong Kong continues to evolve, and striking new retail spaces pop-up across town every day. The recently opened K11 Musea, a prestigious mixed-use complex situated on the grounds of a former dockyard alongside Victoria Harbour, has caught the attention of fashion-forward crowds from home and abroad. The venue’s multi-storey mall accommodates stores by coveted names from fashion’s upper segment, and it’s right here where Guangzhou-based retailer The Fashion Door has set up its first outpost in the city. The shop measures approx. 100 sqm. sees an interior design by Leaping Creative, an architecture practice which is also based in the aforementioned Pearl River Delta metropolis, featuring a design concept inspired by ocean life and recycling industrial waste. Design director Zen Zheng and his team literally delved through debris at a recycle facility, hand-picking a variety of scrap parts and new yet discarded elements to include in the store design.

The objects were cast in resin blocks, dotting the premises as repurposed decoration pieces. An intricately constructed fantastical sea creature installation, crafted from shimmering metal and glass, is prominently displayed at the entrance, signalling the design theme. The semi-circular space is lined with recessed shelving and storage space, alternated by sections of exposed concrete, and concealed behind dark curtains a fitting room can be found. Furnishings comprise of a sales counter, bench and freestanding clothing rack, all made from glass and steel, in addition to a separate seating arrangement near the entrance which features a round table of glass annd semi-circular tufted ottoman in black fabric. Similar to the other stores of The Fashion Door, its newest outpost caters to a savvy young clientele with a mix of edgy Chinese and international brands, including SHUSHU/TONG, Y’s, Cornerstone, Angel Chan, MM6, and Fen Cheng Wan.
