As the disposable income of China’s middle class continues to grow, local retail offerings adapt accordingly and have started to spawn products and services of a more sophisticated kind. Obviously, it’s all happening a little faster in the country’s more advanced first-tier cities and specific regions. As part of the booming Pearl River Delta, the city of Foshan has its fair share of retail perks, and as of late, well-heeled males are able to indulge in fine haberdashery presented in a stylish contemporary setting. We’re talking the new Sigar Bespoke – that’s indeed sigar written with an s – boutique which opened at Lingnan Tiandi, the city’s historic downtown-turned-open air shopping zone. The elongated retail space measures 110 sqm. (1,184 sq.ft.) spread over two levels and features an interior design concept by Chinese practice Construction Union. Given the fact that Sigar Bespoke is a start-up, the budget was modest and needed to be stretched for maximum results. Taking cues from the way textiles are produced, it sees inserted steel frameworks and curved panels which simulate the weaving process. Next to an aesthetic purpose, the interventions also offer practical solutions. An existing staircase, concealed by heavy curtains, is situated in the middle and connects both floors. The store features two salons on the top floor where shoppers can sit back and discuss their bespoke orders, while below the store’s workshops and storage is situated.
