When it comes to luxury fashion and well-assorted multi-brand boutiques, boomtown Chengdu is hot on the heels of what the dynamic shopping arenas Beijing and Shanghai have to offer, and the recent opening of THE REPUBLIQUE is indicative of this trend. Situated on the ground floor of Mi Rui Plaza, a large shopping mall in the downtown district of Jinjiang, the store occupies a 313 sqm. (3,369 sq.ft.) spread across two floors, and features a striking interior design by local architecture practice ARCHETYPE which makes it stand out from the shopping mall’s generic and highly commercialised premises. The chosen aesthetic is not only an interplay of shadows and light, but also of planes and colours reminiscent of early 20th-century Dutch art movement De Stijl. Interestingly, the ground floor windows have been bricked up, using grey and glass bricks which filter the daylight, fully adding to the design objective. The ground floor of THE REPUBLIQUE features various display areas where apparel pieces and shoes and accessories are presented on suspended clothing racks and displays. The clever visual layering continues on the mezzanine floor, but in a more modest way. Here, a backdrop of pristine white bricks, entirely backlit, largely defines the setting. The space provides additional display areas for more fashion collections. THE REPUBLIQUE carries a mix of international women’s brands, including Marni, Subtle Simple, Paskal and Pushbutton.
