Known for its quirky outlook and vibe, you could say Amsterdam does things differently than most other cities, and that includes youth culture. A graffiti scene emerged here in the late 1970s and early 1980s, before a wave of New York City-style wall scribblings became all the rage on the Old Continent. Individual style in the Dutch scene flourished, representing almost every youth tribe, from punk rockers and hooligans, to disco aficionados and other ‘deviant’ demographics. A newly released book, entitled Amsterdam On Tour, a collab effort of online retailer FRESHCOTTON, Carhartt WIP, and graffiti artist and author AGAIN, that extensively documents the rise of Dutch graffiti until 1985. Mind you, over 30 of the most emblematic graffiti artists are covered by way of interviews and photographs, providing not only a in-depth view into the dynamic of this bygone era, but also a lesser known side of the Dutch capital. The number of interviews is quite elaborate, and includes the likes of N-Power, Hugo Kaagman, Ego, Shoe, Walking Joint, Again, Gasp, High, Yaki Kornblit, Blade, Rhyme, Delta, Cat22 and Jaz. Additionally, FRESHCOTTON and Carhartt WIP have also released a limited edition capsule edition which is available at the latter’s stores in the Netherlands and online.
Publishers Note
Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
