Following outposts in New York City, Washington D.C., and most recently in Boston, design-led budget hotel chain citizenM firmly plants a flag on the U.S. West Coast. The Dutch hospitality company picked a location just north of Seattle‘s downtown area and within sight of the city’s Space Needle landmark. The hotel, situated on the corner of Westlake Avenue North and John Street, occupies a purpose-built, seven-storey structure and features 264 rooms. Similar to other citizenM properties across the planet, the rooms are all identical and come as compact prefabricated modular units, and well-designed ones at that, paired with a series of appealing public spaces, all designed by Amsterdam-based design practice Concrete. The wall-to-wall beds are XL King-size and super comfy, assuring any guest a good night’s sleep, and the shower cabins are fitted out with a large and powerful shower head. The lofty ground floor, flooded by daylight thanks to large floor-to-ceiling windows, is home the hotel lobby, or in true citizenM parlance: living room. Boasting a variety of contemporary yet cozy seating areas where to mingle and relax or do get some work done –mind you, the super fast Wi-Fi is free of charge here – each setting has a welcoming sense of home. No wonder, the premises are dotted with carefully curated design furniture pieces by renowned brands and a collection of cool artworks, anchored by a large and colourfful mural by local artist Jeffrey Veregge.

Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
