The stateside expansion of 13 Bonaparte is going leaps and bounds, and as of late, it has a new standalone boutique in New York City to show for it. Situated on the Lower East Side, the store follows store openings at home base Paris and Los Angeles, in addition to a pop-up space right across the street from 13 Bonaparte‘s new outpost in the city. Occupying a 750 sq.ft. (70 sqm.) ground floor space of a 1970s building with a brick façade, it features a meticulously created interior design by the brand’s creative director David Sarfati in collab with architects Tomas Janka and Nicolas Hannequin of New York City and Paris-based practice Once Upon A Time. Capturing a palette that reflects Sarfati’s outspoken sense of understatement, polished concrete flooring is paired with whitewashed walls and volumes clad in shiny corrugated steel.
Interestingly, the large front window obviously serves a practical purpose, allowing in floods of daylight, but it also frames a lively street scene that beautifully contrasts with the serene atmosphere that can be found inside the boutique. Furnishings are sparse, but carefully sourced by Sarfati himself, and include various vintage European pieces and objects, including 1980s armchairs, a pair of Italian floor lamps in travertine from the 1970s, and lacquered metal as well as chrome-plated and velvet stools. Adding an increased cultured element to the retail space is a collection of rare vintage art pieces and photography books, all presented in a separate space where customers can make an inspirational pitstop in between power shopping sprees.

Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
