nestled amongst the dense hubbub of covent garden is a little piece of zen. the unassuming murakami offers japanese favourites with a contemporary twist. the interior is flooded with airy light woods punctuated with verdant greenery. rather poetically the whole experience is designed around the five elements of japanese philosophy - fire from the robota grill, water from the fresh fish, earth from the stoneware crockery, wind from the plants, sky from the atmosphere. light, fresh and healthy, yellowtail carpaccio and ‘new style’ sashimi are quickly succeeded by heartier tuna steaks, baby back ribs and sweet soya big plates from the on-site robota grill. gyoza dumplings, tempura and chicken popcorn make for worthy supporting acts. plates are appetisingly presented but not pretentiously so. we recommend you drop in for one of the excellent value lunchtime sets to try a little of everything - edamame, sushi rolls, yakitori skewers, vegetables and rice.
