Home to a vibrant creative community which is slowly yet increasingly gaining traction abroad, Kyiv has its fair share of cool places created by them and for them. The recently opened Bowl café, a laid-back health food eatery and watering hole in the heart of the city, is a recent addition to the local hospitality scene and also a preferred hangout for the community. Tucked away on the ground floor of a 1930s residential building, occupying a modest 58 sqm. (624 sq.ft.) unit, the premises have seen a striking transformation created by local architecture practice AKZ Architectura. The dimensions may be compact, but the configuration and look certainly make the most of the space. Stuccoed walls with exposed patches of bricks and a painted concrete floor form the backdrop of furnishings crafted from sturdy steel mesh, and these nicely tie in with an opposite wall clad in metal. The marbled service counter softens the austere aesthetic while two lighting rods which span across the ceiling add an elegant touch. When weather permits, patrons can be seated outside on an elongated mesh bench. As said, Bowl caters to a forward clientele, and it does so with a menu which is anchored by various bowls filled with healthy ingredients, such as fruits, veggies, bulgur and light cheese and shiitake, in addition to various coffee options and smoothies.
