Following the opening of new boutiques of Dior, an event we’ve covered in a previous post, and also Hermès, Hamburg gains yet another boutique of one of today’s most coveted brands. Just a few doors down the road, Balenciaga has inaugurated a standalone boutique. The brand already had a presence at the Alsterhaus department store for quite some time, but decided to raise its profile. The store occupies no less than 540 sqm. (5,813 sq.ft.) set across two floors of a modern commercial building alongside Neuer Wall, the city’s renowned shopping artery lined with upscale boutiques. The interior design, created by Balenciaga‘s in-house design team in Paris, follows its signature Raw Architecture aesthetic which dramatically reevaluates the retail design codes of luxury, adapting to its location by using a minimum of new materials.
The settings see backdrops of bare concrete and metal surfaces, incorporating even unfinished of damaged spots. Flooring is equally understated, simple, and very matching, consisting of cement. A metal staircase, similar to versions found in industrial buildings leads to the upper floor. Furnishings and fixtures include sleek suspended aluminium shelving, a variety of large aluminium display tables and cabinets, floor-to-ceiling mirrors, and a specific room is covered by floor-to-ceiling grey curtains, adding textural variety. A site-specific installation on the ground floor features the Balenciaga Bench by Tejo Remy for Droog Design crafted from vintage and deadstock Balenciaga fabric. The new Balenciaga store carries the brand’s full range of men’s and women’s apparel, accessories, bags, shoes, jewellery, and eyewear.

Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
