Commissary in downtown Dallas opened quite a while ago, but its bold, colourful makeover is so striking, we’d like to feature it anyway. The combined café, bakery, butcher and an urban-style food market is housed in a building owned by Headington Companies – it’s the parent company of Commissary – and measures 28,000 sq.ft. (2,601 sqm.) set across five floors. Built 60 years ago, the structure has seen a thorough renovation that took a full year to complete, and even though much of the original architectural features have been retained, it also includes a striking new façade and interior created by Los Angeles-based artist Jorge Pardo. Comprising of more than 27,000 blue and white tiles, the aesthetic also fully extends inside, and is arguably most evident on the ground floor where the café is situated, covering walls, floors and the elongated counter. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow in floods of daylight and adds to an atmosphere that’s airy and bright. In the basement, Commissary accommodates a prep-kitchen and a large wine cellar. The upper floors are used as office space. The menu at Commissary lists a slew of bites and dishes appropriate for any time of the day, from breakfast early in the morning to a late dinner, and anything in between.

Publishers Note
Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
