a massive and prestigious new shopping mall in downtown beirut, built on the site of a number of historic souks that were razed to the ground during the civil war. developed by the omnipotent solidere development company [linked to the assassinated prime minister rafik hariri], the project hasn't been without controversy, and only opened phase 1 late 2009, a staggering 10 years behind schedule. on the other hand, beirut souks looks like the luxury mall downtown beirut needs to shed its tarnished image and take its place in the ranks of global shopping destinations. it's a high-quality shopping environment, created by starchitects such as rafael moneo and zaha hadid. alas, the vibe of the original souks is no more but the complex has retained a fraction of its history by following the original grid plan and their respective names. each souk section is designed by a different architect. for a while it was rumoured that paris-based department store galeries lafayette was to be the anchor tenant of beirut souks, but for some reason that never happened. what's to be found here? so far, a string of mid-range international chain stores such as h&m, zara and mexx. the few upmarket designer stores are located on the east side of the complex, facing the luxury boutique quarter around the aïshti department store. these include the new stella mccartney and chloé boutiques [both franchises of aïshti], and lately louis vuitton and hermès.
