Thanks to its founder Mark Chalmers, The Garage gallery space in Amsterdam‘s Canal District has had a longstanding and close bond with urban culture, and its current show reflects an insider’s view. Entitled 8th Ply, it’s yet another exhibition held at the venue which is supervised by Sasha Bogojev, independent curator and editor at Juxtapoz magazine, and signals the ongoing and fruitful collaboration between Bogojev and Chalmers. On display are works by artists whose lives were, and are, marked by their connection with skateboarding. Unsurprisingly, the title references the sport and lifestyle—seven layers of maple wood, or 7-ply, are the core construction a skateboard deck and the bedrock of this globally activity. In a year when skateboarding was going to debut as an official Olympic sport for the first time in history, the showcase is here to put a focus on another layer of this popular activity. The exhibition presents works by Ed Templeton, James Jarvis, Jean Jullien, Adam Neate, Boris Tellegen, Parra, Josh Jefferson, Andrew Schoultz, and Jeffrey Cheung, and come in a variety of mediums, applying different techniques, and using a diverse range of aesthetics. And while skateboarding is now firmly anchored in mainstream popular culture, the group show aims to emphasise the irreverence of skateboard culture which has made it a lifestyle for many (open until further notice).

Just to be clear – superfuture® is a design blog and not a political commentator. No surprise there. The scope of our content has always been global and borderless, however that can often mean covering projects in countries where we will not agree with the politics or actions of those countries. In a world that’s as screwed up as ever right now, the focus of our support is to those designers, architects and other creatives who aim to make the world a more liveable one – as opposed to people that try their hardest to destroy it. So if a project hits our desk and we like it based on its design credentials, we may choose to publish regardless of its location or creators nationality. superfuture® has always been inclusive and hopes for all current wars, aggression, violence, hate and extremism to end.
