good retail requires a suprise factor and a sense of discovery. the pool, an unusual concept store in tokyo we talked about in a previous post, was set up with exactly that in mind. but even after its much-publicized launch a few months ago it continues to make headlines. opening today on the store's premises is a pop-up store by japanese florist makoto azuma. highly acclaimed for his avant-garde flower arrangements and art projects, makoto's temporary retail space is situated inside the former pool, shielded by an expansive semi-transparent plastic curtain of sorts. an abundance of colourful flowers and luscious plants dot the interior, very much reminiscent of a botanical garden. obviously, these are for sale. but, there's more that can be snapped up at the pop-up store. makoto azuma has collaborated with the pool on a concise apparel collection, in addition to stüssy x fragment design collab items and colourful nike sneakers. all these offerings are interspersed among the flowers and plants [open through aug 31]. location: château toyo minami aoyama, 5-12-24 minami aoyama [aoyama].
