we are the stables is a sydney-based fashion distribution agency with a string of contemporary brands in its portfolio. taking their operations to another level, they opened a store in the bondi area last year, and now expand yet again with the stables co-op in surry hills. this new venture comprises of a store and café, and occupies three levels of a former victorian terrace structure. modified over the years, the building fuses original elements with a rather liberal use of polished cement, timber and glass, resulting in an eclectic modern. located on the ground floor is the stables, a whitewashed minimalist retail space with large windows that allow in floods of daylight.
furnished with only a wooden sales counter and display tables, it forms the perfect backdrop for its tightly edited range of homegrown and international contemporary brands such as bassike, t by alexander wang, common projects, officine générale and han kjøbenhavn. situated right next door is the stables café, a friendly and laid-back meeting place where to meet up or relax over coffee and bites. the setting here is equally spartan-chic, featuring a counter made from black bricks, polished concrete flooring and sets of wooden tables and stools. an outside terrace accommodates those who prefer mingle al fresco.
the menu lists quality coffees, both local and imported, organic and free trade, herbal and chai teas, in addition to a matching lnumber of tasty bites. these include egg roll with crispy pancetta, generously filled sandwiches and salads, all made fresh daily. one floor up the agency's office and showroom are located, as well as an office of another tenant. plans are well underway two open up a new bar + restaurant on the second floor which also has an outdoor terrace. called short & hill, it'll be helmed by an acclaimed chef who concocts a seasonal menu of refined yet simple dishes. location: 352 bourke street [surry hills].
