coterie is a chinese multibrand retailer specializing in high-end eyewear. founded in 2011 by three professionals with a background in fashion, the company anticipated the meteoric rise of a brand-conscious demographic and a specific demand for luxury eyewear. coterie operates a string of boutiques in shanghai, beijing, xi'an and chengdu, in addition to an online store, and continuously seeks opportunities to expand its position in this niche luxury market. shanghai being the country's most forward city in terms of fashion and lifestyle, it was only logical for coterie to introduce its newest store concept n3on there. the upscale retailer opted for a 33 sqm. [355 sq.ft.] unit inside grand gateway 66, a major shopping mall in the xu jia hui area of town, and commissioned shanghai-based architecture firm linehouse to create the interior design.
interestingly, the aesthetic of the space is inspired by perception and the sense of sight by the human eye, and as such notions of the concave and convex, depth of field and perspective were incorporated in the design. to achieve a specific perspective, walls of perforated metal panels – mind you, they're covered in a gradation of holes that dissipate vertically – were installed at intersecting angles, all reflected in side mirrors to create a infinite reflection. in playful contrast, the sales desk at the back of the store and a single eyewear display have been dipped in a fluorescent pink hue. coterie's new n3on store concept exclusively carries a curated collection of luxury sunglasses by brands such as mykita, karen walker, dior, elizabeth and james and chrome hearts. location: grand gateway 66, 1 hongqiao lu, shop 309 [xu jia hui].
