from a fashion perspective, seoul has increasingly gained in prominence, and is one of the cities in the far east where luxury brands set up shop and seek exposure. a dynamic market with sophisticated consumers, it's also one of the preferred shopping destinations of affluent chinese – nowadays the world's biggest spenders on luxury goods – who flock here to splurge on many brands and items unavailable back home. it's no wonder that acne studios, after operating two shop-in-shops in the south korean capital for quite some time, has recently increased its footprint with a flagship store of its own. situated in cheongdam, a leafy neighbourhood along the south bank of the han river, the store measures a spacious 230 sqm. the swedish brand enlisted london-based architect sophie hicks who created a rather stunning retail space with the high level of understatement the brand has become known for. the façade entirely clad in semi-transparent polycarbonate panels that allow in diffused light throughout the premises. the interiors comprise of lofty concrete-infused spaces with rows of pillars that also seem to serve as decorative monoliths. interestingly, the concrete surfaces have been tweaked with a wooden imprint that adds an intriguing texture. furnishings and fixtures are few, consisting of polished stainless steel displays, counters and shelving. the new acne studios flagship store carries the brand's full range of men's and women's apparel, accessories, denim pieces, small leather goods and shoes. location: 79-7 cheongdam-dong [cheongdam].
