following the much publicized opening of a flagship in downtown new york earlier this month, barneys has shifted its focus to the u.s. west coast where it has pulled off a similar move. the luxury retailer has had a presence in san francisco's prestigious union square neighbourhood since 2007, but now it has dramatically increased its retail space by acquiring an adjacent building. the new premises, a standalone store in its own right, measure a respectable 19,000 sq.ft. [1,765 sqm.] spread over a ground floor and a lofty basement section, and it's exclusively dedicated to the relocated men's collections. the opening of this store is part of a bigger scheme, as the vacated fifth and sixth floors of the original flagship will be renovated to accommodate a new branch of fred's, barneys signature lunch spot.
barneys' new men's store is designed by the company's in-house design team, and bears a certain resemblance to the flagship store that has opened in chelsea. the aesthetic is similarly clean and understated, and features a matching palette of whites, grays and sparse touches of shiny chrome and copper. upon entering the ground floor, shoppers find a curated assortment of high-end men’s bags, leather goods, accessories and eyewear. a swirling taircase leads to the basement section where the men's ready-to-wear and tailored collections are presented, in addition to footwear and home furnishings. for the most discerning of customers, there's an area dedicated to made-to-measure and formalwear. mind you, this floor also connects with the lower floor of the original flagship store next door. location: 77 o'farrell street [union square].
