opening today at alāan artspace - an exciting new contemporary art venue in riyadh - is dimensions of design - vitra miniatures, a traveling exhibition of the vitra design museum that presents 100 of the most important designs in modern furniture history from 1850 up to the present day, albeit on a 1: 6 miniature scale. the construction, materials and colours of these miniatures correspond precisely to the historical original, and extensive development work was carried out to adapt the manufacturing techniques to the requirements of miniaturization. because the models are so true to the originals, the miniatures are not only collector’s objects for furniture enthusiasts, but also serve as ideal illustrative material for universities and design schools. it's the first time the collection is on display in saudi arabia, and it covers early pioneers like michael thonet, gerrit rietveld and frank lloyd wright, modern masters such as charles and ray eames, le corbusier and mies van der rohe, as well as contemporary classics by frank gehry. coinciding with the exhibition, alāan artspace will host a panel and workshop with both saudi and regional designers, using the presented models as a jumping off point for discussion [on through feb 2]. location: 280 al urubah road [olaya].
