la gaîté lyrique is one of the most interesting places in paris where urban creativity in all its forms is showcased and celebrated. each year the venue sets out to explore the artistic identity of an interesting major city, and this year it's johannesburg. after decades of an immense divide on many levels, south africa's biggest city may bear the scars of this era, but it's in the process to overcome its dark past and gradually becoming a true melting pot with some unique traits. packaged in a event called sharp sharp johannesburg, over the next four weeks a varied program of cool exhibitions, gigs, talks and workshops is presented that's inspired by and sheds light on the flourishing cultural scene there. highlights include a glam rap party by spoek mathambo, liam lynch's exhibition of urban photography, a talk on post-apartheid by political studies professor shireen hassim and the electro party with globalisto kwaito and friends [on through nov 8]. location: 3bis rue papin [marais].
