the beaugrenelle area along the river seine in the 15th arrondissement hasn't exactly been known to be a shopping destination, but that radically changed when the beaugrenelle mall finally opened its doors late last year after a 10-year construction period. built by french architecture practice valode & pistre, it replaces a shopping center that was erected at the same location in the 1970s. its sleek and hypermodern architecture with glass ceilings, combined with free wi-fi and an appealing range of stores and restaurants, makes beaugrenelle a 21st-century mall that pulls shoppers from across the french capital. not surprisingly, it's in this happening setting where revered restaurateurs fabienne and philippe amzalak, of bon and ma cocotte fame, have launched their newest gastronomic venture called éclectic. similarly to their other establishments the couple have enlisted a top designer to create an eye-catching interior, and this time it's tom dixon's design research studio.
the design of éclectic is a free-form tribute to 1970s architecture and aims to create a whole new take on the traditional brasserie format, creating a more private and more comfortable dining experience. dixon's main objective was to have the restaurant's interior seamlessly fuse with beaugrenelle mall's modern aesthetic, and he has done so by exposing the building's technical areas and by using lots of concrete. the material is used for flooring, either waxed or unfinished, and on the walls where it's eclectically alternated with patches of shiny, golden brass. a direct reference to the geometric and modular concepts of 1970s, is the use of hexagons in the spaces formed by the interlocking central bench seats, the brass detailing that frames the view to the kitchen, and in the design of the 124 metal lampshades of the massive statement chandelier that dangles from the dining room ceiling.
the prominent light fixture is backed up by a myriad of different lamps. éclectic's custom-made furniture has a matching sculptural design, adding up to the highly architectural aesthetic of its location and design concept while it also structures the dining room around key elements that include the imposing coloured leather bench seats, the central alcoves and a succession of small open lounges along the wall that overlook bustling quai citroën and the seine river. known for their longstanding culinary expertise the amzalaks have created an eclectic menu for the modern gourmet, one that combines the flavours of seafood, grilled meats and a rotating range of speciality dishes. a destination in its own right, éclectic is pretty much a place for any occasion, whether it's to meet up business, unwind with friends, or just treat yourself to a sumptuous lunch. location: beaugrenelle mall, 2 rue linois [beaugrenelle].
