fashion and art go hand in hand, and that's certainly the case with cocurata, a newly established and rather nifty multi-disciplinary art platform and fashion label that aims to commercially showcase and exhibit artists and their artwork beyond the usually restrictive parameters of a traditional gallery model. not surprisingly, cocurata is the brainchild of a fashion entrepreneur with a well-known penchant for artsy stuff and a fashion-prone gallerist. we're talking two georges here, ksubi co-founder george gorrow and new york city art connoisseur george benias who joined forces for this multi-faceted venture. and multi-faceted it really is, as cocurata is an exhibition space, atelier and fashion house rolled into one.
the clever duo launch will launch with a varied stable of edgy creatives from across the planet, including street artists bäst and paul insect, multi-talent rostarr, artist collective dearraindrop, and contemporary artists trudy benson, steve more and matt jones. cocurata isn't about making fast fashion and a ditto buck...no sir. the venture is all about truthful creativity, and forging a meaningful link between artist and artisan – a street artist working with a jeweler, a sculptor collaborating with a perfumer or a painter creating bespoke, ready to wear pieces - resulting in artwork and collections that could stand alone in a gallery and boutique alike.
cocurata's inaugural s/s 2015 collection, aptly entitled extraction, features work from bäst, paul insect and rostarr. the design of each piece is the result of a direct extraction of an element from each artwork, which has then been used to create a range of street classics and denim garments for both men and women. mind you, this collection will be followed by an exhibition in new york of a new body of work from dearraindrop coming december, in addition to an international group show early next year, entitled abstraction, which showcases new and recent works by the stable's remaining artists.
