leading contemporary artist ai wei wei has embarked on a project with goo.ey that has resulted in no less than 176 cell phone cases. but not just any cell phone case, no sir! these cases depict portraits of 176 people who imprisoned or exiled because of their beliefs, and all were part of ai wei wei's @large exhibition on alcatraz, an impressive event which we talked about in a previous post. the activists come from all corners of the globe and include both well-known and lesser known faces, such as aung san suu kyi [burma], saeid rezaie [iran], kunchok tsephel gopey sang [tibet], and joni sinay [indonesia]. mind you, these often colourful portraits were composed of lego bricks, and are featured as such. the cell phone cases are exclusively available available online, and 30% of the revenues go to amnesty international and for-site foundation.
