located on pearl street in the financial district, dina rata is the official eatery of the andaz wall street hotel. andaz also has a location on 5th avenue in midtown, and the areas couldn't be more polar in opposition. the financial district being known less for its world class shopping and more for its high octane trading floors and high rise executive dwellings. on a recent field trip downtown however, it was quite the contrary at andaz wall street. dina rata is a cozy, modern bistro serving up redefined american culinary classics and an expert variety of killer cocktails.
definitely the cool kid on its block, andaz wall street is undeniably inviting with its large open spaces, modern design and relaxed, urban atmosphere. and dina rata, nestled into an intimate alcove on the ground floor, compliments this well. open for breakfast, lunch and dinner the restaurant features seasonal dishes using locally sourced ingredients [something andaz likes to do in its restaurants globally] inspired by the hudson valley. on the drinks list, we found a plethora of great wines and spirits and an artisinal cocktail menu using fresh, in house ingredients created by the bar’s expert mixologists.
of mention on the dinner menu is the grass fed blt burger, a re-engineered take on an american staple with its hearty beef, onion and smokey bacon soul. the pomegranate glazed short ribs served with house slaw [a zesty mound of thick sliced burgundy cabbage] are cooked to perfection with melt in your mouth texture. the charred skirt steak is also a winner, well portioned and delicately flavorful. for starters the chicken liver pate [served in a glass jar] with flat bread sticks, apple balsamic gelée and pickled shallots and the white bean hummus with pita are both light, tasty and a great start to the mains.
on the liqour front we started with cocktails - the vow of silence, a powerfull blend of rye whiskey and orange bitters, and the gin martini [served extra dirty] equally impressive kickstarters. the wine list is well curated and both the mudhouse sauvignon blanc and buena vista cab sav complimented many items on the menu well.
for dessert, we opted for the penthouse observatory for an unusually spectacular 360 degree view of downtown manhattan. the circular balcony surrounds an enormous glass walled living area complete with indoor / outdoor fireplaces, a kitchen and a multitude of essential mid century modern arm chairs and sofas. as much as we enjoyed eating at dina rata, we're determined to take our vow of silence up there next time.
