if gold is a hue often associated with ostentation and glamour then comme des garçons would be the last brand that would fit the equation, right? well, think again. the japanese brand's store in chelsea pioneered cool retail in the neighbourhood when it was still an industrial zone back in 1999. it featured a revolutionary shop concept, highlighted by a blind façade and a custom-made tunnel entrance. obviously, it sent shockwaves of excitement around the planet. late last year the store was seriously flooded when hurricane sandy lashed new york city, and altough it eventually reopened, creative director rei kawakubo felt it was time for a groundbreaking metamorphosis.
and she pulled it off in an unexpected way. no worries, the fabulous tunnel entrance is still there, and so are the sculptural serra-esque partitions and fixtures, but now these have been dipped in a shimmering gold hue which, as it turns out, is one of kawakubo's favourite colours. striking additions to the setting are a series of golden tree sculptures by japanese artist kohei nawa and custom-made gold light shades by beirut-based creative agency .pslab. the revamped comme des garçons store carries the full range of the brand's many lines of apparel, accessories and shoes, in addition to a concise and hand-picked selection of other brands. location: 520 west 22nd street [chelsea].
