this one's for fans of cool and quirky reads. opening today [7pm] at haus der kunst in munich is an interesting exhibition on the art and craft of independent publishing. the show is called paper weight - genre-defining magazines, 2000 to now, and is curated by felix burrichter, the editor and creative director of new york-based pin-up magazine. it aims to provide visitors with an insider's perspective on the independent publishing world, while it simultaneously explores the larger cultural influence of the quirky editorial and design perspectives of these magazines. a total of 15 directional titles from across the planet are showcased, each one having achieved a position as a forerunner of broader cultural and editorial shifts in specialized magazine publishing.
the shortlist includes cool magazines with a global cult following, such as butt, apartamento, 032c, pin-up and bidoun. for each title the exhibition presents an oversize double-page spread standing open in the space. the displayed pages are not exact replicas of spreads from the magazines but have been created especially for this showcase [on through oct 27]. a special panel discussion will be held at the opening with haus der kunst's director okwui enwezor, white zinfandel publisher jiminie ha and jörg koch of 032c magazine. and while you're there rubbing shoulders with the indie mag elite, you may as well join the after party [10pm] with dj lafawndah at the venue's fancy goldene bar. location: prinzregentenstrasse 1 [lehel].
