currently on at the magnificent venue of fondazione prada in milan is recto verso, an exhibition curated by nicholas cullinan. the showcase continues an approach from the preceding in part exhibition, held last year at one of the former industrial structures originally included in the art complex. as a thematic show, recto verso presents artworks that consciously foreground the hidden, concealed or forgotten phenomenon of 'the back'. the western art tradition has mainly conceived of paintings as frontal or 'recto' artefacts. the back or 'verso' carries significantly less cultural meaning, and is destined to remain beyond the public’s view, and only visible to the artists themselves or staff at museums and galleries. in this quirky show literally works by various artists over the course of two centuries to today are exposed on both sides, often revealing interesting details that add up to the perception of both the artist and his artwork [on through feb 14]. location: largo isarco 2 [ripamonti].
