today sees the launch of milan's prestigious design extravaganza, the salone del mobile. each year thousands of italian and international furniture + design brands and individual designers present their finest to an equally international audience of professionals and press. it's an enormous circus that pretty much takes over the entire city with presentations just about everywhere. one of the most compelling showcases comes from italian fashion brand marni. showcased at the marni flagship store downtown and the adjacent courtyard, it presents 100 chairs crafted by former prisoners in colombia. called l'arte del ritratto, this presentation is part of of a project to support the prisoners' resettlement into social and working life. all chairs consist of a metal structure and multi-colored pvc threads, featured on the backs and armrests. the seats are quite common south america, but the design has been reinterpreted by the fashion house through modification of the woven pattern and creation of new colour schemes. the chairs are for sale [price range: eur 250-450] and proceeds go to a project of milan's icam institure that allows children of imprisoned mothers to spend their youth in a family environment [on through apr 22]. location: via della spiga 50 [duomo].
