© grupo habita - at downtown mexico colonial architecture blends with raw industrial chic
grupo habita operates a stellar range of hotels across mexico and in new york city, where it owns the much-lauded hôtel americano. its most recent opening took place on home turf, in the heart of the sprawling capital mexico city. very appropriately called downtown mexico, it's located in the palacio de los condes de miravalle, a 17th-century colonial structure smack in the middle of the city's unesco world heritage-listed centro histórico. designed by mexican architecture practice cherem serrano and furnished by interior designer paul roco, the hotel adventurously adds a raw industrial edge to the grand colonial decorum that has been carefully preserved. downtown mexico only features 17 guest rooms and suites, ranging from the refreshingly simple, with original flooring tiles and rustic furnishings, to the downright dramatic, with light timber detailing and vaulted brick ceilings. totally up to standards of today's traveller, they offer all modern amenities such as a king-size bed, a flatscreen tv, an ipod dock and wireless internet.
the private balconies of the guest rooms look out onto the intimate patio - another original feature that was painstakingly preserved during the property's renovation works - while the suites also have views of the cobbled streets of the centro histórico. the public spaces are an oasis of organic simplicity with grey volcanic rock and exposed concrete walls and form a balanced contrast with the building's ornately decorated façade. located in the central balcony is the breakfast patio and hotellobby. it's unique space that allows comprehensive views of the architecture and a dramatic fresco by muralist manuel rodríguez lozano. an expansive, constructed from cement tiles and concrete, occupies the entire rooftop. here you can dip leisurely in the fabulous pool or jacuzzi, and have a drink at the poolside bar. and obviously, the elevated position comes with great views of the neighbourhood. location: calle isabel la católica 30 [centro histórico].
