spin galactic is laid-back and fun ping-pong social club. it's a place where you hang out with friends and play ping pong while enjoying a cocktail or a bite. first launched in new york city by multitasking creatives franck raharinosy, andrew gordon, jonathan bricklin and susan sarandon, the ball game concept gradually spread acoss america and has now gained a foothold in sunny california. the newly opened spin standard la is located at the standard hotel in downtown los angeles, where it occupies a rather spacious 7,100 sq.ft. [660 sqm.] venue. spin standard la features 11 olympic-grade ping-pong tables, including one superfancy artist-designed backlit table by ryan mcguinness, alongside funky nightlife elements including three bars, food by the hotel's very own chef micah fields, music and dj stations. mind you, players will be able to connect both on the court and very soon also on a special iphone app. the opening party pulled a variety of guests, including 16 year-old u.s. olympic ping-pong team prodigy erica wu, topher grace, rodarte's kate and laura mulleavy, and last but not least hotelier andré balazs and susan sarandon herself. while guests were split into teams for a grand opening tournament, deejays atlanta de cadenet and jake shears hit the decks. and if you'd like to join, memberships are available now. location: 550 south flower street [downtown].
