'what a show!' would be a perfect and simple way to describe what happened on the evening of wed – feb 10 at the hollywood palladium. it wasn't a mere presentation of a fashion collection on a catwalk, it was a celebration of what hedi slimane is and does. although this show wasn't in paris, this was the most parisian collection that hedi created. the crowd was a mix of hollywood stars, l.a. bands and members of the industry. a show, this mix itself is one. the anticipation was high and the lights went out. as usual, a stunning coordinated light show opened the runway with a soundtrack composed by pypy – recorded in my hometown of montreal – and you had a front row bieber drumming with his hands and feet.
what walked on the runway was an homage to hollywood, the 1970s and slimane's beloved rock music, which were all concocted in parisian ateliers. the garments were stunning. the usual saint laurent silhouettes were present, but the unexpected nods to the designs of yves saint laurent were also quite evident. clothes at the level of haute couture were being presented in hollywood and it was fantastic. the heavily embroidered, sequined and shiny creations were almost lost in the midst of the dancing lights and the sea of flashes. a delight. silky velvets, luscious locks and a cape that we all wish to see on the pope.
python stompers, the best furs of this whole menswear season which also featured an avant-goût of his womenswear collection that is set to be presented next month in the city of light. the afterparty was, conveniently, at the same location. a lineup of bands, all handpicked by the cult designer, was also perfectly fitting: father john misty, beck, joan jett, allah-las, the sloths, cherry glazerr, curtis harding, no parents and bleach shared the scene. performances got cut off early so king and the created and mystic braves couldn't play. being next to hedi slimane in the same hollywood venue as pole dancing strippers and sylvester stallone only add to the fact this night was a magical celebration of excellence that the man behind saint laurent is – written by superfuture reporter william sgroi.
