it's been four years since citizenm opened its first property in amsterdam. the stylish budget hospitality chain has now embarked on an accellerated global expansion program and recently opened in london, around the corner from the renowned tate modern. the 192-room citizenm london bankside is designed by amsterdam-based practice concrete, and features a similar sleek formula with high-end design and the very latest in technology, all at an affordable rate. rooms are compact but offer every amenity today's savvy traveller requires, such as a very comfortable wall-to-wall kingsize bed with luxurious bed linen, lcd tv, vitra design furniture, free wireless internet and a bespoke touch-screen tablet that allows you to control absolutely everything in the room [tv, free movies, window blinds, temperature, ambient lighting, wake-up alarm themes] but also gives access to the internet and your fav social media channels. citizenm london bankside's public spaces have been designed with a similar eye for detail. the open-plan lobby on the ground floor is an inviting space styled as a living room full of superb vitra design furniture, and since it's so close to one of the planet's leading contemporary art venues, the hotel has made extra effort to blend in, most notably with another world is possible, a massive work by turner prize nominee mark titchner that adorns the hotel façade.
there’s even the possibility to snap up art as citizenm london bankside has partnered with amsterdam design bookstore mendo. the latter operates an indoor shop that carries a cool selection of photography, architecture, fashion, and travel books. another highlight on the ground floor is the self-serve canteenm, which beckons to the hungry and thirsty. this area was designed to feel like a home kitchen arranged around a red wooden coffee bar, along with an adjacent bakery-style open kitchen with fare that shifts from delicious baked goods in the morning to light lunch and simple dinners and cocktails later in the day. you can pick from a variety of food and drinks, then work at one of the four macs near the kitchen or hang out at a marble-topped table in the café. a striking spiral staircase connects the ground floor to a series of seven meeting rooms, accommodating 2 to 24 people, arranged around the courtyard on the first floor. the courtyard is a relaxing urban oasis of sorts, featuring birch trees, hanging lanterns and a wooden deck with popping red chairs and bench. two additional london properties are scheduled to open next year. location: 20 lavington street [southwark].
