for the very first time aesop has shifted its focus away from the tokyo metropolitan area to set up shop in japan's cultural capital of kyoto, and its our fav store design to date of the australian cosmetics brand. the store has a downtown location and boasts an interior by designer shinichiro ogata. given the brand's self-alignment with literature, it's more than appropriate that the interior references a collection of cultural elements: junichiro tanizaki's essay in praise of shadows, the aesthetics of 14th-century actor and playwright zeami motokiyo, the city’s traditional machiya townhouses, and the vertical alignment of the japanese script. an antique waterpump is positioned in the window and signals the store's design aesthetics from afar. the interior boasts a simple black + white palette that is maintained throughout the premises. a veil of black mesh, with aesop bottles sewn to it in calligraphic order, demarcates the entrance corridor from the retail area. the display section features an island fitted with copper plumbing houses the demonstration sink in the centre of the display space. it's easy to see why this is our fav aesop store to date! the new aesop store carries the brand's full range of skin, body and hair care products. location: 97 aburaya-cho sanjo [central kyoto].
