jakarta firmly ranks in the top 10 of the planet's biggest metropolitan areas yet it lacks the a-grade standard of living and infrastructure that most of its listed peers do have. but indonesia's recent economic growth rates have been very promising, injecting the country with new perspectives and initiatives that now start to trickle down to the level of product marketing. as a result more and more consumer events with an international flavour are held in this sprawling boomtown. in this category falls essential eames, a pop-up store and exhibition that traces the lives and work of charles and ray eames, and which recently opened at gandaria city mall in leafy south jakarta. the show is a collab between eames office, an organization that is dedicated to communicating, preserving and extending the work of charles and ray eames, and furniture manufacturer herman miller, and is centered around the book an eames primer by eames demetrios, the designers' grandson.
the exhibition corresponds to the book's chapters. upon entering the exhibition space visitors are greeted by walls that tell the story of charles and ray’s life, elaborating on the humble beginnings of charles eames life to his tenure at cranbrook academy of art as a design lecturer, and on to the many facets of their work from architecture to film, toys, products and furniture. the setting of the jakarta showcase is designed by local architect marcello sidharta who was inspired by the couple's design philosophy and approach, embracing the venue's high ceiling and recreating the façade of the iconic eames house case study #8 [on through jun 22]. location: gandaria city, jalan sultan iskandar muda, ground floor [kebayoran lama].
