fashion brands diesel and edun have teamed up to create a collab denim collection that's built around a reinterpretation of the four-pocket jean of the 1970s popular on the streets of south africa. textile prints from mali are echoed in the denim lining and across the jersey pieces in the collection. embroidery details reference traditional zulu weaving patterns, while the dresses feature kenyan metalwork. running through the collection are four original symbols designed to reflect the heart of the diesel+edun collection. this collection is accompanied by studio africa, a groundbreaking campaign that serves as a virtual loudspeaker of sorts for a new and eager generation of african creative talents from across this vast continent.
the campaign not only features nine artists in fashion, film, music, literature, and photography, but also showcases work by a range of others. award winning south african photographer and filmmaker sean metelerkamp is in the latter category. in celebration of the collab collection metelerkamp shot pantsula vs. puppets, a video which is a marriage of lively fashion and dance set to an exclusive track by the very best & moroka called ndekha and featuring south african dance group real action - clad in the diesel+edun collection - and showing the vibrancy of the traditional pantsula dance.
