dubai's rise isn't just of global significance but also extends to almost any field of expertise, including art and design. the emirate may not originally have the cultural legacy that's usually required, but it has invested its petrodollars in hammering out the necessary infrastructure that will get the job done in that department as well. officially opening today is design days dubai, already the region's leading design fair and one of a string of annual art events that sustains dubai's voracious ambition to become a true creative hub. this year's edition is once again held at the venue - a specially built venue next to the soaring burj khalifa - and sees the fair's exhibitiors further increase to 32 art galleries from around the planet, including +coletivo amor de madre [são paulo], carpenters workshop gallery [london + paris], carwan gallery [beirut], j+a gallery [dubai] and coalesce design studio [karachi]. next to the design days dubai fair a special program of lectures, workshops, screenings and art installations has been organized to immerse oneself even more in the world of design. this year's program highlight undoubtedly is the lecture of paris-based designer india mahdavi on her design approach and career path [on through mar 21]. location: the venue, mohammed bin rashid boulevard [downtown dubai].
