trailing the much-publicized retrospective of damien hirst in doha which we featured in a previous post, both prada and the artist himself added to the hype with a whimsical two-day installation in the desert just north of the qatari capital. mind you, britain's best-selling contemporary artist has collaborated with the italian luxury brand on the entomology collection, a limited edtion series of bags, decorated with beetles and precious stones. the bags are to be auctioned off and the proceeds will go to charity. the installation comprised two specially conceptualized bedouin tents, one featuring the prada bags in the brand's signature retail setting, and the other a nomadic juice bar version of london's groundbreaking pharmacy restaurant which hirst co-launched back in 1998. hailed as qatar's new culture queen, sheikha al-mayassa bint hamad bin khalifa al-thani is the driving force behind qatar museums authority and the doha film institute, two increasingly influential organizations that not only have reshaped the country's cultural landscape and identity, but also helped to put it on the global map. damien hirst's retrospective in doha is very much part the sheikha's audacious strategy. location: somewhere in the desert north of doha.
