dallas isn't really that small a town and has a distinct vibe all its own, but with the renewal of the joule hotel it has acquired an edge of contemporary cool we usually come across on either the west or east coast. the five-star property has been under wraps for two years during which it was extensively refurbished and expanded, adding 29 suites, three new penthouses and an expansive luxury spa. the project was an elobarate one as the joule occupies three historic buildings from the early 20th century, and consequently a whole team of top creatives was enlisted to get the job done, all supervised by new york-based interior designer adam d. tihany.
the aesthetic of the additional rooms, all located in a second tower, takes cues from french novelist jules verne's journey to the center of the earth, but the modern style and feel of the 129 rooms in the first tower have been retained. additionally, 21 new premier guestrooms, eight deluxe suites and three ultra-luxe penthouse units have been created. mind you, two of those penthouses are multi-level and have a private terrace, while the third occupies an entire top floor, offering sweeping views of downtown dallas. but the joule has some other interesting facilities up its sleeve which add up to its new and happening vibe, most notably the opening of eight curated shops on the premises. each store carries unique offerings - often new to dallas - presented in a variety of cool retail settings.
los angeles-based emporium traffic has opened up shop, featuring high-end brands such as ann demeulemeester, rick owens, paul smith and dolce & gabbana. additionally, they've opened a second unit and that one's dedicated entirely to comme des garçons play. tenoversix also originates from the golden state, and caters to younger shoppers with hipster labels like opening ceremony and maison kitsuné, but also art objects, home design, beauty products, books, and a selection of cd's and dvd's. the latter also bring weekend, a laid-back coffee parlour that serves fresh bean selections from seattle-based victrola roasters and plenty of in-house baked bites. publishertaschen pitches in by launching a stylish library fitted entirely with an abundance of its glossy art + design editions.
the luxury spa by espa is another asset. it measures a whopping 8,000 sq.ft. [743 sqm.] and is designed for total relaxation and rejuvenation. the facility has a 320-square-foot unisex vitality pool with built-in air massage loungers, separate gender, european heat experiences with crystal steam room, a sauna, an ice fountain, and guests can experience shower, as well as pre- and post-treatment relaxation areas. the joule has always been an art haven, boasting a fine collection of works by a string of renowned artists. continuing this tradition, it has acquired new works by a number of young artists and these are put on rotating display in the hotel's public spaces and stores. location: 1530 main street [downtown].
